Typical illnesses during summer vacation

For many, summer vacation is the best time of the year. After a cold and long winter, it is the sun, relaxation and adventure that make people look forward to their summer vacation. However, despite all the anticipation, you should not forget your own safety. Illnesses can often occur unexpectedly. You can find out what these illnesses are in most cases and how you can protect yourself against them here.

Sunstroke & heatstroke

Intense sunlight on your neck and head can very quickly cause sunstroke. In extreme heat, it can even lead to heatstroke. This is because your body can no longer maintain its temperature regulation. Both sunstroke and heatstroke can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea and unconsciousness.

How to protect yourself: Always wear a hat to avoid exposing your head to direct sunlight. In addition, avoid physical exertion in the midday heat and stay in shady places if possible. It is particularly important to drink water regularly.

Sunburn & skin damage

Exposure to the sun for too long without protection can permanently damage the skin. Sunburn can occur very quickly and increase the risk of skin cancer.

How to protect yourself: Of course, you should apply sunscreen regularly. Use a sun cream with a high sun protection factor. What many people forget is to use an after-sun lotion after a day at the beach or another long stay in the sun. This serves to soothe and cool your skin.

Gastrointestinal infections

Contaminated food or tap water are often the cause of gastrointestinal complaints, especially in warm countries. Possible symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting and fever.

How to protect yourself: Make sure you only drink bottled water and avoid ice cubes and raw or undercooked food. Protect yourself by practicing good hand hygiene, i.e. washing and disinfecting your hands regularly. Also make sure that you have packed enough medicine.

Insect bites & tropical infections

Mosquitoes, ticks and other insects are particularly active in summer. In addition to itching and swelling, insect bites can also transmit dangerous diseases such as malaria.

How to protect yourself: Always find out about recommended vaccinations for the region you are traveling to before your trip. Also make sure you have enough insect repellent with you. Depending on the region, sleeping under a mosquito net and wearing long clothing can also help prevent insect bites.

Your suitable insurance cover

Despite these measures, you may still need to see a doctor or go to hospital. It is therefore highly recommended that you take out health insurance during your stay. This not only covers visits to the doctor and medication, but also hospital stays and return transportation. This means you don't have to worry about high costs, which is particularly beneficial in countries with high healthcare costs, such as the USA.
